If anyone's interested ........a diary of past gigs, recordings, events, news (compiled since June 2002. My personal comments on gigs are written in red!

September was a great time for gigs - the most notable one being the Marsden Jazz Festival with Paul Bentley and Plus Four! A Fantastic atmosphere. Paul Bentley has his own website up and running which includes a comical biography about his band mates! have a look

After a busy summer, I am back at the computer and studio preparing tracks for my new project. A CD of new material accompanied with a book of transcriptions........... More on that to follow.

Gigs

15/09/04 - with DB5 - (Jazz Quintet) @ Debees, Winsford www.debees.com always a pleasure entertaining this regular audience. I think my old pal from Leeds college Steve Parry (trumpet) depped on this one??

19/09/04 - with Big Finn (In The City event) @ The Sound Garden, Blackfrias Street, Manchester Gig staged to coincide with the IN THE CITY event, since no industry delegates showed it was .a bit of a non event this time.

25/09/04 -with Jim Whyte Trio @ Nicholsons, Altrincham Village. Strange Venue......NO!!! A trendy wine bar!........I don't think they like Jazz in Altrincham!! Great to play with Jim though.

29/09/04 - with DB5 - (Jazz Quintet) @ Debees, Winsford www.debees.com

09/10/04 - with Plus Four @ Marsden Jazz Festival Probably the gig of the year for me, certainly with Plus Four...Bentley was really on form as always ;-)

12/10/04 - with Jeremy Sassoon @ Smiths, Eccles Manchester. Just a duo with Jem Sassoon, pretty good night..six string and upright....the kitchen staff enjoyed it anyway - the head chief asked me if I knew any Primus!!! I attempted to play "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver"!!!!!!!

13/09/04 - with DB5 - (Jazz Quintet) @ Debees, Winsford www.debees.com

14/09/04 - with Plus Four @ Barsh, Cheadle High Street. l

On Internet Radio

On 27/07/04 the track "Pusher" of my album "Make Time Last" was played on "The Upper Room" by Joe Kelley. I hope someone out there was listening -cause I sure as hell missed it! Also "Vision Inside" by Matt Swindells was also on the play list. Anyway, now as I am writing this update I am listening to the station - broad mix of music, sounds pretty good.

Gig With Rebelski at London's Royal Festival Hall

I will be joining Doves keyboard player Martin Rebelski ( buddy from Salford Uni "Pop and recording" class of 96/97) on stage at Royal The Festival Hall to open the show for Manchester's Baldly Drawn Boy on Friday 6th of August. In addition Cath Evans drummer with Holly Lerski/Angelou will be on stage too.

Plus Four Website

I've been busy again building web-sites, this time to promote a band I regularly play for the fantastic Plus Four! Follow this link and have a listen.

Gigs

Thursday 5th August - Ollie Collins Trio featuring Aaron Liddard @ Lloyds, Chorlton Village.I remember that it was a good gig......but I cant recall who else was playing in the band that night, other than the great flamboyant Aaron Liddard.............that's Pick Up Bands for ya!

Friday 6th August - with Rebelski@ The Royal Festival Hall. The big support gig of the year for me and the first time that I've played at the RFH I enjoyed the gig enormously. I play so few notes in Martins songs that I almost feel like a spectator at times......a great release from Jazz/Swing.

Wednesday 18th August - with DB5 - (Jazz Quintet) @ Debees, Winsford www.debees.com

Thursday 19th August - Cancelled - The Raven Of Destiny Trio!!! ( Ollie Collins, Matt Steele and Dave Walsh)@ Barsh High Street Cheadle. Acoustric will be appearing instead! Well the Raven wasn't to be, instead a brief Acoustric line up.

Wednesday 19th May - With Big Finn and sharing the bill with my bro's band "Starbase 109" @ Jabez Cleg, nr Manchester University. Not the best Big Finn audience turn out, but monumental occasion as it was the first time in about 10 years since I shared the same show with my Brother John.

January was a relatively quiet month musically, so it gave me chance to catch up on a backlog of web authoring. As well as rebuilding this site, I have also constructed pancakerepairs.com a site consisting of music and words from friend and talented musician Matt Swindells. Also a new site is in the making for Plus Four - a jazz/swing group I am playing with from Manchester.

Angie Palmer

One of the recording projects I was involved in last year was with talented singer/ writerAngie Palmer. I contributed Acoustic and Fretless basses. The album "Road" has already been a hit on Bob Harris' Country show on BBC Radio 2 and has been aired several times already this year. The Album was also selected as CD of the month at CDBaby. Read their review.

With the warmth of Joni Mitchell, she's the kind of artist thatevokes a spontaneous exhale; a relieved sigh that comes from thecomfort of her rich, solidsong writing and the modern ring of contemporary handling, reminiscent of Shawn Colvin. Angie Palmer weaves the ring of her guitar with the resonant buzz of her hearty voice and the lilting message of her songs, occasionally blessed by the voice of cello, into a collection of lightly country-tinged gems. CDbaby - February 2004

Gig With Branford!!

Fortnightly gigs with DB5 and Laura Hassel continue at Debees in Winsford, Cheshire and last month we were lucky enough to be joined by no other than Saxophone legend " Branford Marsalis" who was in town playing a concert with the Halle Orchestra. The band was on fire and cloud nine at the same time!! See what the local press had to say.......

The jazz evenings continue (see gig listings below) at debess, try and make it down.......you never know who might be dropping in.
