King Pin

Back in the 80's, Mark King and Level 42's music played a significant role towards my musical development! The original line-up with the Gould brothers (Philip -Drums, Boon Guitar) created some of the most imaginative super tight grooves embedded in soulful pop songs. If you don't believe me, then listen to " A Physical Presence Live" This album represents the Level in authentic form.

In the tune "King Pin" is reminiscent of Level 42's Starchild! Not one of Level 42's strongest tunes admittedly. But it does posses that killer unison bass and guitar groove. And no one plays four on the floor quite like Phil Gould!

The rest of the track was inspired from the Starchild groove. The lead melody was played on the piccolo bass and I added synth, pads and additional percussion. The horn arrangement was layered using a multitude of brass and saxophone patches from the Korg Triton. I couldn't resist using the Sequential Prophet 5 Tooley sound, a favorite patch for Mike Lindup!

I hope you enjoy this tribute!

High Ace

The piccolo bass really is the ideal solution for the bassist who wishes to accompany. High Ace started as a solo piccolo bass part. However, as I developed the parts further, I soon realised that with only four strings, I couldn't perform all the melodic material I was hearing.

Later came a guide fretless bass track for an alto sax or trumpet melody to be added on a later session. I recorded the parts on Cubase VST and therefore couldn't resist using the pitch shift audio function, if nothing else to see what the melody would sound like in the correct octave. With the addition of reverb and chorus, I fell in love with the resulting effect - flugal horn, guitar synth, sitar ? No! fretless bass.

I hope you enjoy the track! Guestbook.
